Deq is a traditional tattoo culture that has existed in Mesopotamia for centuries. These tattoos, especially on certain parts of the body such as the hands, arms and face, have been used not only for aesthetic purposes but also as a symbol of belief, belonging and social identity. Deq tattoos, which are shaped according to each society’s own belief system, have been carried from the past to the present as a cultural heritage.
The Deq tradition from Mesopotamia to the present
Deq tattoos, which were once seen in every village in Mesopotamia and on the bodies of every woman and man, have unfortunately become a rare tradition encountered in rural areas and among elderly individuals today. However, this unique culture is starting to become visible again thanks to some names.
Fatma Temel: The tattoo journey from Mardin to Sur
Mardin tattoo artist Fatma Temel opened a small but meaningful shop in Sur, the historical heart of Diyarbakır, to keep the traditional Deq art alive. In this shop, Temel, who embraces both her own roots and the deep history of Mesopotamia, works to carry the Deq culture into the future.
Fatma Temel, who says, “I work to prevent the Deq culture from disappearing,” sees this art not just as a tattoo, but as a form of memory, identity and resistance.
A tradition that is gaining traction among young people
Deq tattoos, although they are mostly seen among older individuals today, have started to gain traction among the younger generation in recent years. Fatma Temel evaluates the youth’s interest in this tradition as a sign of a cultural reawakening.
What is the meaning of a Deq tattoo?
Deq tattoos are generally designed as: Protective talismans, Family and tribal symbols, Fertility, power and sacredness signs.
These tattoos have often been used as a tribal language, a silent form of expression. Fatma Temel also researches the meanings of these symbols and carries them into her tattoos.
