April 23, 2025Sewing Kurdish-specific clothing in Istanbul
Like many families, the Bakır family migrated from Van to Istanbul due to village evacuations in the 1990s.
Living in Küçükçekmece, Istanbul today, 42-year-old Rıdvan Bakır carries the traces of this migration in both his life and his profession.
Bakır, who learned and continued the tailoring profession from a young age, now draws attention with his workshop where he sews traditional Kurdish clothing.
The workshop he opened in Küçükçekmece has become a center where Kurds in Istanbul can access traditional clothing and has contributed to the strengthening of cultural ties that came with migration.
