April 22, 2025Apple with Carnation: A symbol of love and peace in Kurdish culture
The carnation apple is a deep-rooted tradition in Kurdish culture, representing love, peace and reconciliation. This tradition, which has been kept alive since the past in geographies such as Mukriyan and Erdelan, where Kurds live in Iran, and the Germiyan Region near Sulaymaniyah in Iraq, still exists in many regions today.
Symbol of love and peace
The carnation apple is not only a visually elegant object; it is also an expression of emotion. According to tradition, carnations are stabbed one by one into an apple, leaving no space between them. This process requires care and patience and can sometimes take hours. The apple is then either given to the loved one or handed to the person they want to make peace with.
Apple with carnations event in Diyarbakır
This meaningful tradition was kept alive again with a special event organized in Diyarbakır. The event was organized by Chalak Events in collaboration with Şewl û Xaraw, where participants prepared apples with carnations for their loved ones or those they had offended.
The scene that emerged during the event was a powerful expression of love, peace and cultural commitment. Participants presented the apples with carnations they had prepared with their own hands to their loved ones, either as a confession of love or as a peace offering.
