A cultural journey with Ma Music
22.04.2025Spanish writer Michel del Castillo’s novel “Guitar” was adapted for the theater by master playwright Semih Çelenk and titled “Ugly”. This impressive story was translated into Kurdish by Hacı Zeyrek and brought to the stage under the title “Kirêt”. The play meets the audience at the Mordem Art Center in Diyarbakır with the interpretation of theater actor Veysel Aslan.
A one-man confrontation: “Kirêt” with Veysel Aslan
In his one-man performance, Veysel Aslan reveals that the concept of “ugly” is not only a physical appearance, but also a label shaped by the prejudices imposed by society.
Saying that “ugly is actually a state of well-being”, Aslan brings to life the inner world, struggles and efforts to remain good of an individual who is excluded, humiliated, despised and isolated from society.
The plot of the play The story of being the other
“Kirêt” tells the story of a boy who is ostracized by society because he was born ugly. This child is humiliated, despised and isolated… But despite all this, he tries to preserve the good in him. The play weaves around the following questions:
Can social prejudices change, no matter how hard you try?
Or do prejudices shape you completely and determine the direction of your life?
Can art be the voice of an outcast individual?
Why is “being yourself” so difficult in today’s world?
Ugly A story of love and resistance
“The Beast” is not just a character; it is actually a confrontation with the other that everyone carries within themselves. This profound text by Michel del Castillo brings the well-being of humanity, the transformative power of art and the questioning of social assumptions to the stage.
A reality mirrored with “Kirêt”
Kirêt is the voice of a child who is pushed out of society, while giving the following message to its audience: True beauty lies not in appearance, but in the effort to protect the good. This play, brought to life by Veysel Aslan’s powerful performance, leaves its mark both on the stage and on humanity.
