Narratives about the Kurds of Konya from Nuh Ateş
April 23, 2025Soranis in Anatolia: The migration story of the Şeyhbızın tribe
The Şeyhbızıns are a deep-rooted Kurdish tribe that has lived in different regions of Anatolia for centuries.
This community, which draws attention with its language and cultural structure, is distinguished from other Kurdish groups especially by its linguistic characteristics.
The Şeyhbızıns, whose origins are in Iranian and Iraqi Kurdistan, have a dialect close to Gorani and Sorani. This has given them a different tone for many Kurds in Anatolia.
Migration map: The journey from Siverek to Haymana
The Şeyhbızıns’ journey in Anatolia has been shaped by many changes of location throughout history.
The tribe, which first settled in regions such as Siverek, Diyarbakır and Harput, migrated to Haymana over time.
Today, approximately 30 villages around Haymana belong to the Şeyhbızıns, and this has become one of the most densely populated places of the tribe.
Ottoman policies and new settlement areas
The settlement and economic policies implemented during the Ottoman period carried the Şeyhbızıns even further north.
The Şeyhbızıns, who were forced to migrate to regions such as Sakarya, Sinop and Kastamonu to meet Istanbul’s meat needs, began to engage in animal husbandry and trade in these regions.
Şeyhbızıns Today: Ankara and all around Turkey
Şeyhbızıns, who are active in many sectors, especially in Ankara, especially in the market and bazaar business, have established themselves in many areas of life.
Important names have emerged in the community in areas such as education, art and bureaucracy.
One of these, former diplomat and also on the editorial board of Pîjok Magazine, Erhan Akbenli, narrated the tribe’s migration adventure to Anatolia for Şoperêç.
An identity shaped by migration
The Şeyhbizins are not just a migration story, they are one of the important Kurdish communities that have gained a solid place in the multicultural structure of Anatolia and are distinguished by their language and lifestyle.
The Şeyhbizins, who have adapted to different geographies without breaking away from their roots, are a remarkable example today in terms of both cultural continuity and economic existence. They carried not only themselves but also a language, a culture and a memory to every place they migrated to.
