Barış Işık: We want children far from art to connect with art
April 22, 2025Keeping Kurdish culture alive with handicrafts
İlyas Karagöz deals with handicrafts specific to Kurdish culture in his workshop he established in Suriçi, Diyarbakır. The jewelry he designs with his own hands, local clothes and traditional motifs he embroiders on stone are a reflection of his efforts to keep cultural values alive from the past to the present.
Karagöz, who says, “I want to do things specific to Kurds as much as I can,” sees his art as an expression of identity and a means of cultural memory.
Production inspired by tradition
Karagöz’s works are not only crafts; they also serve as a carrier of memories. Each pattern represents a past; each motif tells the story of a community. Stonemasonry and traditional symbols are among the details that stand out in his works.
A cultural workshop in Suriçi

A journey of handicrafts kneaded with culture
İlyas Karagöz continues to keep Kurdish culture alive with traditional arts. Each of his works leaves a mark on the cultural memory; it builds a meaningful bridge between the past and the future.
