Central Anatolian Kurds through the eyes of foreign travelers
23.04.2025Dengbej Kurdê, one of the living representatives of the dengbej tradition, took the stage as part of the Solo Fest4 organized by Mordem Sanat in Diyarbakır.
Dengbej Henîfa, who he usually performs with and addresses as “my teacher”, could not take the stage this time due to his illness. However, Kurdê became the voice of both himself and Henîfa.
Kurdê (57) was forced into a marriage through a bride exchange when he was only 10 years old. Henîfa (46), who shared the same fate, was also married off at a young age.
Dengbej was passed on as a tradition in both of their homes and their paths crossed thanks to the Laleş Culture and Art Center established in Silopi. They have been an inseparable duo since that day.
Speaking to Şoperêç after the event, Dengbej Kurdê criticized the lack of value given to dengbej with the following words:
“In this world, We haven’t seen anything beautiful. Even if we see something from now on, it’s useless.”
The story and interpretation of the song Heyran Jaro
Dengbêj Kurdê first introduced Heyran Jaro, one of the songs he performed on the Solo Fest4 stage, to the audience with its story.
In this kilam that deals with the themes of love, longing and helplessness, we witnessed how passion burns from a woman’s tongue.
With Kurdê’s interpretation, Heyran Jaro echoed both to the past and to the present.
The story of the song Berivane
Berivane, another folk song he performed at the festival, turned into a folk elegy in Dengbêj Kurdê’s language.
Before the stage, he told the audience the story of the song’s birth; then he interpreted Berivane with his sincere and powerful voice.
This performance received great applause from the audience.
The song Feleke: The melody of fate
Feleke is a melody woven with fate, poverty and social pain.
Before singing the song, Kurdê deeply affected the audience with his story that told the cruel aspects of life.
Later accompanied by kaval and erbane, he sang this lament.
Bavê Feqî: An unforgettable Dengbêj performance
Dengbej Kurdê, who took the stage with the story of the traditional song Bavê Feqî, brought the song to life with both his narrative and his voice.
This kilam, sung years ago, came to life again in Kurdê’s mouth.
