22.04.2025Ma Music was founded on March 3, 2017 in Diyarbakır with the motto “Music for everyone, music everywhere”. Since its foundation, Ma Music has become a pioneering institution in the field of Kurdish music education, and continues to work with the goal of not only individual but also social transformation.
Adopting the slogan “The children of this country will not be left without music” since the day it was founded, Ma Music has provided Kurdish music education to 4,59 children and young people to date.
Ma Music’s structured education process
Education at Ma Music starts from the prenatal period and continues with special programs for different age groups:
Prenatal period: Early education starting with musical stimuli
Ages 0-5 years: Music workshops with parent participation
6-14 years old: 6 years of academic music education in the Kurdish mother tongue at Ma Children’s Academy
15 years old and above: 3 years of advanced music education under Akademî Ma
The final stage: If they wish, graduates can join Ma Music’s teaching staff and pass on music education to other children.
Established units and activities
Many different music units have been realized within Ma Music so far:
Women’s Choir
Children’s Choir
MA Orchestra
Natural Rhythm Orchestra
Zarok Ma (Music for children collective)
Dengbêj Academy (Space for keeping alive and teaching the oral Kurdish music tradition)
Through these units, both traditional and contemporary music approaches are brought together to support the cultural and artistic development of children.
Şêrko Kanîwar: We wanted to bring music to every home
Şêrko Kanîwar, one of the founding team of Ma Music, who today serves as both coordinator and instructor, talked about this cultural journey for Şoperêç:
“We wanted to bring music not only to the stage, but also to every home, to the world of every child. For us, it is not a dream for every child to be introduced to music in their mother tongue, but a matter of right.”
