Handmade pepper paste: A delicious labor from tradition to the present
23.04.2025Süleyman Şahin, 77, who lives in the Hacıbaba Neighborhood of Antep, spent most of his life working as a porter. When his aging body could no longer carry heavy loads, he started working as a hawker. Now, he is trying to make a living by opening a small slipper stall near his home.
A lifetime of labor, still endless financial hardship
Şahin, who dreams of resting after years of hard work, says that he still feels obliged to work today. This small slipper stall, which he set up due to financial hardship, represents both his source of income and his connection to life.
“We can’t make ends meet, so I have to open the stall,” says Süleyman Şahin, who continues to contribute to the household economy.
Süleyman Şahin, whose strength is no longer as strong as it used to be, is helped by his children in carrying his mobile stall. Şahin, who sets up his stall every morning with this support, completes the day with a few pairs of slippers that he can sell.
But this is not just a sale; it is another form of survival, resistance and production.
