Working to prevent the Deq culture from disappearing
22.04.2025Erdal Tüt has been a sculptor in Diyarbakır who has been working with stone, wood and soil for years. He creates works that touch on the history and identity of the region with the works he produces inspired by his own culture and life experiences. Tüt, who continues to produce in his studio in Diyarbakır, explained his artistic journey for Şoperêç.
Inspiration from culture: My works are about my culture
Erdal Tüt’s sculptures are shaped not only by aesthetic concerns but also by a search for identity and memory. The artist expresses this situation with the following words:
“My works are about my culture and my life.”
Tüt reflects his own past, the story of his people and the spirit of the geography he lives in in each of his works.
A workshop living with art in Diyarbakır
The workshop that Tüt established in the center of Diyarbakır is not only a production area, but also a living cultural space where visitors can experience art and craft on site. Here, he combines traditional methods such as stone carving, wood shaping and clay sculpture with contemporary interpretations.
Stories told with natural materials
The materials that stand out in the artist’s work come from nature: stone, wood, soil… Each material gains an identity in Tüt’s hands; it becomes a symbol of Kurdish culture and Mesopotamian memory. He brings the past to the present with his cultural art and handmade sculpture production.
